John Gary Crain

John Gary Crain, 75, of Hamburg died Monday May 13, 2019. Mr. Crain was a native of Lacey and a resident of the Milo community, outside of Hamburg, for the past 52 years. 

He graduated in 1961 from Drew Central High School and attended Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello), where he played basketball in 1962. Mr. Crain worked for the Georgia-Pacific Corporation for 44 years, retiring in 2006. 

He loved his church family and was an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Free Will Baptist Church. He was a Mason and a member of the Prairie Lodge No. 465. Mr. Crain enjoyed being outdoors and working in his garden. He loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren in sports and all of their activities.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sam Crain Stanley, in 2006, and his parents, Earston and Hazel Cowan Crain.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sheliah Meeks Crain of Hamburg; his daughters, Sissi (Wayne) Cruce of Lacey and Nikki (Jon) Fitzgerald of Crossett; a brother, Robert “Bobby” (Beverly) Crain of Selma; six grandchildren, Randa Matkin, Garrett Pruitt, Ali Jo Cruce, Shay Straub, Boots Stanley and Cagan Calhoun; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Mt. Pleasant Free Will Baptist Church, with Bro. Keith Boseman officiating. Burial will be with full Masonic honors in the Lacey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Pallbearers are Danny Wade Rice, Fred Hollis, Jimmy Meeks, Randal Meeks, Wayne Neal, Paul Wilkerson, Dickie Meeks and Joe Allen Meeks.  Honorary pallbearers are Timmy Craig, Julian Estelle, Pat Allison, Mike Richard, Benny Cochran, James Robert Meeks, John Richardson, Frank McMahan, Dr. Michael Fakouri and the Drew Central High School Class of 1961. 

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, 310 Ashley Road 95, Hamburg 71646. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg.
