Weevils’ slide continues

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils continued their three-game road trek last Thursday, with the second stop on the trip at Bethany, Okla. to face off against Great American Conference-leading Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm.
In the contest, Southern Nazarene scored the first points of the contest, a three-pointer by Jhonathan Dunn. UAM’s Keelin Jackson tied the game at three at the 17-minute, 57-second mark with SNU taking the lead back a few seconds later. Southern Nazarene never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the contest.
UAM pulled within one point with 11:25 remaining in the half with a three-pointer by K.J. Lesure to make the score 11-10. But the Weevils would go scoreless for the next 4:22 of the contest, ended when Jared Embry connected on a jumper in the paint to pull UAM within 10 points, 22-12.
SNU would finish the half with a 37-20 lead.
UAM could not pull itself back into the contest in the second half as SNU continued to extend its lead. SNU’s biggest lead came with 9:55 remaining in the contest—a 34-point, 65-31, advantage.
The Weevils cut the lead to 24 points before the end of the contest after Damontrez Hawes scored with a jumper in the paint with 11 seconds remaining to make the final score 73-49.
Jordan Embry and Kwame McBean led the way for the Weevils with 10 points apiece followed by Jackson with seven points. Jared Embry finished with six, and Austin Hardy with four points. Hawes, Hunter Daley, Marcus Gilbert and Lesure all scored three points to round out the scoring.
Traveling from Bethany, Okla. to Shawnee, Okla., UAM would make its final stop against another conference leader in the Oklahoma Baptist University Bisons on Saturday.
Oklahoma Baptist got on the board first with a layup by Dishon Lowery and the Bisons remained in the lead until UAM’s Lesure gave the Weevils the lead, 13-12, with 11:38 remaining in the half.
Both teams traded the lead for the remainder of the half with the Bison coming out on top with a 30-27 lead at the half.
Oklahoma Baptist extended the lead to eight points with 18:13 remaining in regulation. UAM cut the lead to four after points by Gilbert and Lesure.
The Bison’s Dishon Lowery extended the lead to nine points with 15:57 remaining with a layup in the paint.
Oklahoma Baptist continued to hold the lead until Gilbert connected on a three to give UAM a 59-58 lead with 4:25 remaining. Jackson extended the Weevil lead to four points with a three at the 3:28 mark.
Oklahoma Baptist battled back to tie the contest at 62 before the buzzer sounded to force an overtime period.
In the overtime, UAM took the lead and extended the lead to six points, 68-62, with 3:55 remaining in the period.
UAM continued to lead until Oklahoma Baptist tied the contest at 71 with 39 seconds remaining. UAM’s Jackson gave the Weevils the lead by one point, 72-71, with 21 seconds left on the clock.
Oklahoma Baptist’s Antonio Wade was sent the free-throw line with six seconds remaining in the contest, connecting on both shots to give the Bisons a 73-72 win.
UAM missed a three pointer as time expired.
For UAM, Lesure led the way with 23 points followed by Jackson with 13. Jordan Embry and Gilbert each scored 11, Hardy eight and Jared Embry rounded out the scoring with
six points.
With the losses, UAM has now dropped five straight contests. The Weevils’ overall record fell to 10-8 and their conference record to 6-6, ranking them seventh in the conference.
The Weevils will play the next four games at Steelman Field House, though, with the first contest taking place Thursday against Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The tip is set for 7:30 p.m. Southwestern Oklahoma State University is next on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip scheduled.
